about

My third EP pays homage to the music of the Caribbean and draws a musical and cultural parallel between the cities of Cartagena, Colombia and Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

These two cities not only share a common ocean but also an important slave trading past which resulted in a cultural exchange that continues today. Before the Haitians gained their freedom from the French, slaves from Cartagena escaped and created the first free African village in the Americas called San Basilio de Palenque.

Zemis are a sculptural object that presents a deity or ancestral spirit. They have been found through out the Caribbean and even as far as Colombia and Venezuela. Their discovery in Latin America underscored the cultural impact the Tainos had on the indigenous cultures beyond the confines of the Caribbean.
